What is new in AASync version 3.6.4 for Windows

  • Bugfixes to enable syncs to UNC paths (\\SERVER\path\to\folder, etc..) and a bugfix in remote mirror syncs.

What is new in AASync version 3.6.4 for Mac

  • Implemented "Duplicate Sync Definition" menu option.
  • Implemented e-mailing sync logs after scheduled syncs. This option can be enabled under Sync Options/Scheduling tab. The mail/SMTP settings can be entered on Global Preferences/Email Settings tab.
  • Retrieveing will always create a new folder now, under the designated Retrieve Folder. It will NOT overwrite or delete anything.

AASync version 3.6 Conversion Notes: Selective Retrieve is a new feature in AASync 3.6.. If you browse a archived /encrypted destination for files AASync will show you the original file names, making it easy to pick what you want. Remember, these files are actually renamed during the archived backup sync. In order to make this happen, after installing AASync 3.6 you must run the sync in question successfully before you can use the selected retrieve feature. If you have not done so, You can still browse and restore selectively, but you will not see the original filenames during the browse. Once you run the sync and try selective retrieval, all files known to AASync will be displayed in green with their original names, where the files that only exist in the destination (remember, these are cumulative backups) will be displayed in red with their actual remote file names. We recommend that you make a complete rebuild of your backup with AASync 3.6 starting with an empty destination folder. After this you will never see files in red, AASync will alwyas know their original names, even if they do not exist in the source folder any more.

Mac - Windows Feature Parity:

There is now 100% feature parity between the Mac and Windows versions. Mac and Windows licenses are still not compatible, we are working on that..

Mac - Windows Compatibility:

As of version 3.6, AASync for Mac and AASync for Windows are compatible in features/interface and in the archived /encrypted archives they create. That means that you can retrieve an archive made by the AASync/Mac (let's say to an FTP server) using AASync/Windows. There are some caveats like you have to keep in mind that a different set of characters are disallowed in filenames on the two platforms, so if your filenames use any of these characters, you may have some problems with the cross-platform retrieval. Aside from that, the archives are platform independent.

AASync version 3.5 Conversion Notes

AASync will read your version 2 and 3.1 sync definitions, convert them to version 3.5 format (and still keep a copy of the original). IF YOU USED ENCRYPTED SYNC IN VERSION 3.1, READ ON!. In order to make encrypted sync more reliable, from this version on, encrypted sync MUST be combined with archived sync. What this means is that the file/folder names in the destination folder will be archived , then on top of that you can also encrypt the contents of the files. This was necessary because there were many possible conflicts and problems that have arisen from filename incompatibilities between different hosts, and if content encryption is used, these problems made the recovery of encrypted sync files unreliable. In order to provide industrial grade reliablity for encrypted backups, we must combine it with encoding. The procedure to convert encrypted syncs to AASync 3.5 is fortunately very simple. AASync converts the sync definition automatically, so there is nothing to do inside AASync except maybe verify the settings by opening the Options panel for these syncs. What you have to do by hand is to clean up the destination folder, delete all files copied there by the previous version. For obvious reasons, AASync will not do this step for you. Once you cleaned up the destination folder, just run this sync in the AASync GUI. AASync will make a complete copy of your source in the archived /encrypted format (depending on the size this will take a while). We understand that this might be inconvenient for a large backup, but it is well worth it. This cleanup is mandatory if you want to keep making encrypted backups. After this everything will work as usual.
